Purpose

The Academic Affairs Ombudsperson is available to assist faculty, staff and student employees address questions, concerns and complaints about academic affairs related issues.

What is the role of the Academic Affairs Ombudsperson?

The AA Ombudsperson is a neutral individual who listens to complaints and grievances and provides conflict-resolution services for all faculty, staff, and student employees in a safe and welcoming environment. Communications with the AA Ombudsperson remain strictly confidential unless express permission to do otherwise is granted by the visitor or the AA Ombudsperson is required to disclose based on applicable University policy, legal considerations, or a perceived imminent risk of harm to self or others. The AA Ombudsperson does not advocate on behalf of any one person or group, but will advocate for an unbiased process and consider the rights and concerns of all those involved. The AA Ombudsperson communicates with various representatives and offices to respond to and help resolve concerns in a timely manner.

The Academic Affairs Ombudsperson

  • Listens to and discusses questions, concerns and complaints of faculty, staff, and student employees concerning the academic enterprise.
  • Evaluates options to address faculty and staff academic concerns and answers or seeks others who can answer academic related questions.
  • Explains academic policies and procedures or seeks others who can explain the policies and procedures.
  • Facilitates the mediation of disputes to achieve a "win-win" resolution of the issues.
  • Seeks input from others or makes referrals when appropriate.
  • Seeks and obtains resolution of questions, concerns and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Creates an open environment in which faculty, staff and student employees can discuss academic related issues.

The Academic Affairs Ombudsperson carries out duties in a neutral and informal manner.
** The Academic Affairs Ombudsperson does not provide legal or psychological counseling. Information submitted anonymously is forwarded to the appropriate college or department head.**
