CLASS: Coordinated and Linked Approaches to Student Success

CLASS Initiative V

LEADERSHIP & PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION

The CLASS Leadership and Professional Preparedness Task Force was charged with reviewing current career skills programs and mentoring programs, which includes peer mentoring, faculty mentoring and college mentoring, and creating a plan for implementing strategies, approaches and processes that will better align these programs with the needs of UTSA students. The task force identified three areas of focus: career options assessment; recent graduate network for mentorship; marketable skills in the curriculum, in alignment with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s 60x30TX strategic plan.

CLASS Strategies for Leadership & Professional Preparation

  • Continuous career options assessment at orientation and during freshman and sophomore years

  • Identify and build recent graduate networks

  • Identify marketable skills in curriculum;
    • Identify competencies (soft skills, specialized or technical skills, software skills)
    • Determine and write-in marketable skills that will be intentionally practiced or learned into each course syllabus
