Civil Discourse Faculty Learning Community

Introduction

Welcome to the Civil Discourse Faculty Learning Community at UTSA. This initiative is designed to help faculty members explore and implement strategies for promoting civil discourse in their classrooms and the broader campus community. By joining this community, you will be part of a collaborative effort to foster respectful and constructive dialogue among students, enhancing the educational experience and contributing to a positive campus climate.

Purpose

The Civil Discourse Faculty Learning Community aims to empower faculty with the knowledge and tools necessary to facilitate civil discourse. Our activities and discussions will align with the principles outlined on the Capacity Building Around Civil Discourse at UTSA webpage. Through this community, faculty members will learn to create environments where respectful conversations can thrive.

Program Description and Calendar

The program will be offered in hybrid modality, with a combination of live sessions with guest speakers from UTSA and the San Antonio community, and asynchronous activities. 

Tentative Schedule:

  • Week of September 30, 2024: Welcome to the program and Faculty Spotlights
  • Week of October 14, 2024: Classroom Dynamics
  • Week of October 28, 2024: Conflict Resolution
  • Week of November 11, 2024: Strategies and Impact
  • Week of December 2, 2024: Cultivating Connection in Our Community
  • Week of January 13, 2025: Strategies and Impact
  • Week of January 27, 2025: Skill-building for Students
  • Week of February 10, 2025: Final Session

Throughout the program, participants will work on a teaching strategy that they will implement in their courses to promote civil discourse and deliberative practices.

Objectives

  • Understanding Civil Discourse: Learn the principles and importance of civil discourse in academic settings.
  • Exploring Best Practices: Share and discover effective strategies for promoting respectful dialogue.
  • Implementing Strategies: Develop and integrate classroom activities that encourage constructive conversations.
  • Building a Supportive Network: Connect with colleagues dedicated to fostering a culture of respect and active listening.

Who Should Apply

We welcome applications from faculty members across all disciplines who are committed to enhancing civil discourse within their teaching. Whether you are an experienced faculty member or new to teaching, your participation is valuable.

Supplement: Faculty who successfully meet the requirements to complete the program will be eligible for a one-time supplement of $500.

To apply, please submit a brief statement (up to 500 words) that includes:

  • Your interest in civil discourse.
  • Current or past efforts to promote respectful dialogue in your teaching.
  • How you hope to benefit from and contribute to this learning community.
