Innovation Academy

Course Capacity: 50 seats
Eligibility: All faculty are eligible to apply and receive the incentive. Instructors with Assistantship titles, staff, or previous recipients of a stipend for this incentive are ineligible.

Course Description

The Innovation Academy invites faculty to enhance their teaching skills by creating a holistic learning environment, leveraging technology for effective teaching, incorporating experiential learning, and designing student-centered classrooms. This program encourages educators to reflect on their teaching methods and collaborate with peers to discover new ways to engage and empower students. 

Joining the Innovation Academy means becoming part of a supportive peer learning community that values instructor presence, active engagement, and the continuous improvement of teaching practices, all with the goal of delivering outstanding learning experiences for students. 

The course structure includes both live interactive sessions and self-paced asynchronous activities, ensuring accessibility for all without any prerequisites.  

Discover the intricate relationships between cultivating a strong sense of belonging, effectively utilizing technology, implementing experiential learning, and creating student-centered classrooms. 

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:  

  • CLO 1 Recognize the relationship between building a sense of belonging, utilizing technology, implementing experiential learning, and creating student-centered classrooms. 
  • CLO 2 Apply inclusive teaching practices that leverage technology to enhance belonging and engagement. 
  • CLO 3 Incorporate experiential learning opportunities to build connections between the classroom and careers.  
  • CLO 4 Develop a teaching tool kit to holistically enrich students' educational experience.

Course Format

The course is offered entirely online in a hybrid format. Participants are invited to engage in four live synchronous sessions facilitated by a faculty member and the Teaching, Learning, and Digital Transformation team. Participants are also expected to work autonomously on the asynchronous course components focused on activities that will help them create content and activities for their own courses.

Academy Schedule:

  • Monday, July 8: Academy Launch
  • Monday, July 8: Start Module 1: Building a Sense for Belonging
  • Monday, July 15: Start Module 2: Teaching with Technology
  • Monday, July 22: Start Module 3: Experiential learning and Building Classroom to Career Opportunities
  • Monday, July 29: Start Module 4: Student-Centered Design
  • Monday, August 5: Innovation Project Due

You will need to commit some time to work on your innovation project and meet with the Teaching and Learning Consultant.

Time Commitment and Course Completion Requirements

The time commitment for this course is estimated to be 10 - 15 hours. (4 hours for live sessions, 8 hours for modules, and 1 hour for consultation). 

To successfully complete the Innovation Academy and be eligible for the course certificate and the one-time incentive, there are two requirements: :  

  1. Complete the four self-paced modules in Canvas
  2. Submit an Innovation Project (there are two options for submitting, select one) due August 5, 2024. 
    • Option 1: In groups (2-4) or individually, design an experiential learning project relevant to the subject matter. Each group will present their project plan, emphasizing how it promotes critical thinking and experiential learning.    
    • Option 2: Create a 10 – 15-minute video sharing your innovation project, describing the plan for integrating two new instructional elements/practices in your work. 

Incentives/Certifications upon Completion

Upon completion of all requirements, participants will receive a certificate of completion and a one-time incentive of $500.
