Roadrunner Assistantship Academy

Eligibility: All graduate students are welcome, but priority goes to those appointed as Teaching Assistant I, II, or Student Grader II for Fall 2024.

Course Description

The RAA is a week-long intensive program designed for graduate students teaching in the upcoming academic year. These online sessions focus on the skills and resources needed to be a successful student and a successful instructor.

During the Academy, students with assistantships will engage in presentations led by teaching and learning professionals from Academic Innovation, learn more about our campus partners and their services, as well as make valuable connections with each other.

Course Objectives/Outcomes:

  • identify best practices in community building, communication, and leadership.
  • apply foundational course design principles to various aspects of teaching and learning using the Canvas LMS.
  • create engaging course content using a variety of digital tools and engagement strategies.
  • design application materials that leverage their assistantship experiences and are appropriate for various roles.

Course Format

This course is primarily online. All sessions Monday through Thursday will be held online with an encouraged day of networking, professional development, and celebration on campus, in person on Friday August 16.

  • August 13, 2024: Active Learning Strategies—9:00am-3:00pm
  • August 14, 2024: Course Design and Assessment—9:00am-3:00pm
  • August 15, 2024: Connecting with Campus Resources—9:00am-3:15pm
  • August 16, 2024: Encouraged (optional) in-person day—9:00am-3:30pm

Time Commitment and Course Completion Requirements

Each day of the Roadrunner Assistantship Academy includes approximately 6 hours of programming, including a lunch break. Friday’s program includes in-person programming with breakfast and lunch provided.
