Maho Sonmez: Supporting online instruction through peer mentorship

While instructors around the country were working quickly to move their classes online a few years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Maho Sonmez was ahead of the curve, having already created college courses in a fully digital format for his department three years prior. He later used this experience with online course development to help other faculty members as an official peer mentor, easing their transition as they switched to remote instruction. Read more

Uchenna Emenaha: Creating connections to advance equity in STEM education

From a young age, Uchenna Emenaha’s family emphasized the importance of getting an education and made her feel comfortable and confident in her ability to pursue higher learning. Emenaha knows that many students do not have this same feeling of self-assurance in the classroom, and this is largely what inspired her to become an educator. Alicia Swan’s career in psychology did not start in a typical way. Now an assistant professor of psychology at UTSA, Swan committed to psychology late into her junior year after participating in a transformational undergraduate research program.
