UTSA recognized as a 2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting

UTSA has been named a 2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting, joining 471 institutions nationwide recognized for exceptional efforts to boost nonpartisan student voter participation in the 2024 election.

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) is a national nonprofit organization that empowers colleges and universities to achieve excellence in nonpartisan student democratic engagement. The organization supports over 1,075 institutions nationwide, collectively engaging 10.8 million students in civic participation.

"The research is clear: colleges and universities that make intentional efforts to increase nonpartisan democratic engagement have higher campus voter registration and voter turnout rates. This year we saw more colleges than ever before step up their efforts to ensure that their students were registered and ready to make their voices heard at the ballot box," said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, executive director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. "These Most Engaged Campuses are setting the standard for nonpartisan civic engagement work for colleges and universities across the country."

UTSA’s commitment to civic engagement

This recognition reflects the impactful work of the UTSA Center for Civic and Community-Engaged Leadership, which leads the university’s voter engagement initiatives. Through a comprehensive, nonpartisan civic action plan, the center promotes voter registration, education, and participation among UTSA students, faculty and staff.

Key efforts in 2024 included:

  • Hosting on-campus and online activities to boost voter literacy, aligned with National Voter Registration Day, National Voter Education Week, Vote Early day to promote early voting, Election Hero Day, and Election Day.
  • Convening the RowdyVOTES Community of Practice, a collaborative network of campus and community partners focused on enhancing democratic engagement at UTSA.

Through this collaboration, community organizations such as MOVE Texas, NextGen America, Radical Registrars, Your Vote Texas, and the League of Women Voters of the San Antonio Area regularly visited UTSA to assist students with voter registration and provide election resources.

The center also empowers students and faculty through community-based experiential learning programs designed to develop civic-minded leaders and foster meaningful contributions to the public good.

A recognized leader in civic engagement

UTSA’s consistent voter engagement efforts have earned repeated recognition from ALL IN over the past several years.

Additionally, Maria Alejandro, the center’s director, and Noelani Cubillos-Sanchez, the center’s civic leadership program specialist, are 2024 Fellows of the ALL IN Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Community of Practice. As fellows, Alejandro and Cubillos-Sanchez actively support and provide guidance to the colleges and universities across the country that are part of the ALL IN HSI Community of Practice.

By institutionalizing civic learning and voter participation, UTSA demonstrates its ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of nonpartisan democratic engagement.
